Little Libraries

Updated: Aug 19, 2021

A little action for a big cause!

Little Libraries is an amazing organization made to help promote reading within communities across the country. With this service project, you will have the opportunity to either build your own library with the purchase of a charter, or purchase a pre-built library to place in your area! Whichever you choose, you and your club will be able to decorate, register, and place your library in a community you see fit to encourage literacy and healthy hobbies, simultaneously connecting the members of the community!

STEPS

1. Fundraise! It costs money to build or purchase these libraries, ranging from $40 to $150. You will need to gather money to pay for such expenses before deciding to pursue this campaign. Further, discuss if it’s necessary to pay for a full library, or if your club will be able to build your own! Remember, this must be sturdy, weather proof, and sustainable!

2. Purchase! Go to the little library website, https://littlefreelibrary.org/start/ , and view their steps on buying, building, and placing your library. We will attach one step on the website we feel you should know first before your purchase, visit the link for more!

  • First decide where you can legally and safely install the library. The location should also have a lot of foot traffic and be highly visible to anyone nearby. Then identify at least one person to be the steward (steward = caretaker). This person promotes the library and makes sure it is clean and inviting.

3. Decorate! Personalize your library with the help of your members; this is your opportunity to really make this library your creation and a light within the community. You can also @ Let’s Dreams Instagram and paint our logo as well as your club name to spread the word of our organization. Use these tips when building!

  • Use recycled and found materials if you can.

  • Demonstrate green building techniques and materials whenever possible.

  • Build and finish the library to last. Use screws rather than nails, and several coats of stain or paint.

4. Register your library! After finding a legal location for your library, go to the website and register your creation, pick a stewardess for the library, and add your library to the world map. Then have members donate books to put into the library to begin the process of book swapping.

5 . Fill out the Volunteer Form! Get volunteer hours based on the pictures submitted.
