CREATE A STUDENT-LED PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH THE ADEQUATE SUPPORT THEY NEED!

Focus: Gun Violence

PROBLEM:

School shootings typically involve both feelings of anger and access to guns. Some students may suffer from mental health issues alone since oftentimes, their signs of distress are ignored. This can cause them to be so overwhelmed that they feel the need to take out their frustration by harming others.

SOLUTION:

One of the best ways to prevent school shootings is by ensuring students are in a supportive school environment. Create a student-led support program that focuses on students' mental health and provides them with the adequate support and resources they need. Peer counselors will be trained to lead with compassion and empathy to effectively navigate different emotional needs and struggles. Some students may also feel more comfortable talking to their peers who understand and have experienced the same things instead of school counselors.

STEPS

  1. Ask! Ask your school for permission to create this school program.

  2. Plan! Once you gain approval, decide how you will create your program. Here are a few things to consider:

a. Create an application and hold an interview for those who want to apply as student counselors. (Feel free to post flyers or on social media about the open positions!)

b. Create a training session for those who made it in! Teach them to right responses to certain situations and how they should help students who have come for emotional support.

c. Where and when will you hold the program? (ex: during lunch in a teacher's classroom).

d. Will students sign up for a time to talk to the student counselors or do they come in whenever?

2. Publicize!

a. Make flyers or post on social media about the student-led support program.

3. Start your program! After all the preparations, you and the other student counselors can help and support other students in your school!

4. Always feel free to ask for help, suggestions, or twist these campaigns yourselves by

talking to an officer from DoE on discord!

5. Fill out the Volunteer Form! Get volunteer hours based on the pictures submitted.
